Fury Family Takes Over Budapest: Tommy's Back After 2-Year Hiatus

I nearly spat out my coffee when I saw the news this morning. Tommy Fury is FINALLY returning to the ring after what feels like forever, and get this – he's bringing big bro Roman along for the ride. Talk about keeping it in the family.

Listen. Two years is a hell of a long time to be away from something you love. I remember back in 2021 when I took three months off from the gym and felt like a complete stranger when I returned. Poor Tommy's been dealing with hand surgery, mental battles, and that whole messy Till situation that went nowhere.

That Darren Till Drama Though...

Remember when Tommy was supposed to fight Darren Till in January? What a disaster that turned into. Till – the former UFC guy with apparently zero understanding of boxing rules – literally threatened to KICK Tommy in the head. Like, what did he think this was? Some sort of street brawl behind a pub?

Tommy pulled out. Obviously.

The whole thing left a bad taste in everyone's mouth and had people wondering if the Love Island star was done with boxing altogether. (I'll admit, I was one of the doubters.)

Budapest Calling

But now we've got May 9th circled on the calendar. Budapest, Hungary. The comeback nobody saw coming.

Tommy announced it on his social media with teh kind of passion that makes you believe he's genuinely pumped to get back in there: "The hardest battle I've faced has been the mental battle of being away from boxing. But I'm back stronger, sharper, and more HUNGARY than ever."

See what he did there? Hungary/hungry? I rolled my eyes too.

What About Roman?

Roman Fury – the 28-year-old cruiserweight who's sitting pretty at 4-0 – will be fighting on the same card. His own post was significantly less wordy: "May 9, Budapest, back with a BANG."

Honestly, I've only seen Roman fight once, and that was at some small venue in Manchester where I paid £40 for a ticket that should've been £20. He's got potential though – that Fury DNA clearly runs strong.

He was supposed to fight that TikTok guy Chase DeMoor back in March on KSI's card, but then KSI got sick and everything fell apart. My buddy who works security at these influencer events texted me that night: "another cancellation, another paycheck gone." Poor guy.

Is This Just a Warm-Up?

No opponents have been announced for either Fury yet, which makes me think this is basically a tune-up event. Tommy hasn't fought since beating KSI in October 2023 (in what was possibly the most controversial decision I've seen since I started covering boxing in 2018).

Before that, he squeaked past Jake Paul via split decision in Saudi Arabia.

Word on the street is Tommy's still contracted to Misfits Boxing, and there are whispers about potential rematches with both Paul and KSI. My source at Misfits (who'd kill me if I named them) said: "The money's too good to ignore. Tommy knows where his bread is buttered."

From Love Island to Boxing Legacy?

It's been a wild journey watching Tommy transform from that reality TV heartthrob to someone actually trying to build a legitimate boxing career.

God. Remember when everyone thought he was just riding Tyson's coattails?

I've been following the Fury saga since Tommy first appeared on Love Island back in 2019. Five years and only a handful of fights later, I'm still not entirely convinced he's committed to the sport long-term. But this comeback might prove me wrong.

The real question is whether Tommy can eventually step out of the influencer boxing world and into something more... legitimate.

I guess we'll start finding out on May 9th.
