Jimmy Anderson gets knighted by Rishi – along with a boatload of his Tory mates

God. I nearly spat out my coffee when I saw this morning's honours list. Cricket's Jimmy Anderson finally getting his knighthood is the least surprising bit – it's the parade of Tory politicians Rishi decided to reward on his way out that's got me rolling my eyes so hard I might strain something.

I've been following Jimmy's career since he first started terrorizing batsmen back in teh early 2000s. The man's a genuine legend – 704 wickets is just absurd. I remember being at Lord's in 2018 when he took his 500th Test wicket. Paid £85 for a decent seat and it was worth every penny. The roar from the crowd still gives me goosebumps.

Is this the most political honours list ever?

Let's be honest about what's happening here. Rishi Sunak got absolutely demolished in July's election, and now he's handing out titles like party favors to his cabinet buddies. Michael Gove, James Cleverly, Grant Shapps, Jeremy Hunt... it's basically the entire front bench getting a consolation prize after being kicked out of government.

My mate who works in Westminster texted me about this yesterday. His response: "They're all getting titles while the country's going to hell. Classic."

Jimmy's cricket legacy

Back to Anderson though. The Lancashire legend earned 188 caps for England, which puts him just behind Sachin Tendulkar's 200. That's rarified air.

And he's not done yet! Still playing county cricket at 42. Madness.

Richard Thompson, the ECB chair, called it "a really well-deserved honour for an England legend who has given so much to our sport." Bit of an understatement if you ask me. The man helped win the Ashes four times and kept bowling like a demon well into his 40s while the rest of us can barely get up from the sofa without making weird noises.

The Tory Honours Bonanza

Sunak really went to town with this list. Peerages for Michael Gove, Mark Harper, Simon Hart, Victoria Prentis and Alister Jack. Knighthoods for Hunt, Cleverly, Shapps, and Mel Stride. Dame Commander for Theresa Villiers.

Funny how Rishi praised Gove for education reforms that "resulted in a sustained improvement in performance in world rankings." My sister's been teaching for 15 years and would have some choice words about that claim.

Even Andrew Mitchell got a Knight Commander title. Remember "Plebgate"? When he allegedly called police officers "plebs" at Downing Street? Apparently all forgiven now.

Wait... Matthew Vaughn?

The most random addition has to be filmmaker Matthew Vaughn getting a knighthood. Don't get me wrong, I love "Layer Cake" and "Snatch" as much as the next person, but it feels a bit out of nowhere. Must have some good connections.

I feel stupid now for not realizing sooner that having friends in high places is the real path to getting honored. Should've gone into politics instead of journalism!

Starmer's Lords Problem

The irony in all this? Keir Starmer has promised to abolish the House of Lords entirely. But that won't happen before the next election, so these new peers get to enjoy their titles for a while at least.

Meanwhile, Kemi Badenoch (current Tory leader) has nominated former Ofsted chief Amanda Spielman for a peerage. Interesting timing, given Spielman just publicly criticized Labour's academy reforms.

Politics, eh? Like watching a very slow, very boring game of chess where everyone gets a trophy at the end regardless of who won.

At least Jimmy Anderson genuinely earned his knighthood through decades of excellence. Unlike some of the others I could mention...

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of fielding practice in a cricketer’s training?

Fielding drills are an essential component of a cricketer's training routine, with the modern game placing a high premium on fielding standards. A good fielding performance can alter the outcome of a game, whether it's by preventing runs, catching incredible balls, or causing game-changing runouts. Fielding drills are designed to improve agility, catching accuracy, quick reflexes, and throwing accuracy. Regular practice makes fielders sharper, more agile and quicker in the field. This boosts the defensive capabilities of the team and can contribute to its morale and momentum.

How do cricketers maintain their mental focus during long matches?

Cricketers must develop the ability to remain mentally focused throughout lengthy matches. They do this by utilizing various mental conditioning exercises. The techniques include visualization exercises, goal setting, meditation and other methods that can help cricketers to remain calm and focused during situations of high pressure. Sports psychologists will often work with cricketers to develop mental resilience. This helps them deal with stress anxiety and distractions. A common technique is to focus on the delivery of the speech rather than the overall outcome.

What dietary practices do cricket players follow?

Cricket professionals adhere to a carefully tailored diet that takes into account their specific needs and physical demands. Dietary regimens are based on a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates for energy and proteins for muscle growth and repair, as well as fats to provide longer-lasting reserves of energy. Water and sports drinks are essential to staying hydrated. This is especially important during long periods of playing. They usually work with sports nutritionalists to optimize their diets based on their training schedules or match timings.

Do cricketers train all aspects of the game or just one?

While cricketers often specialize in one primary skill set, such as batting, bowling, or wicket-keeping, they are generally trained in all areas of the game to be versatile and adaptable on the field. Even expert batsmen or bowlers spend time improving their fielding ability. All-rounders, players who are equally adept at batting and in bowling, divide their training time so that they can develop both skill sets. Training in all facets of the game is essential for team balance, and it provides greater strategic options for the team's composition.

What are the differences in training for fast and spin bowlers, respectively?

The physical demands of fast bowlers and those of spin bowlers are different. So is the training. Fast bowlers concentrate on building strength, speed and endurance. They also focus on strength and aerobic exercises to improve their ability to maintain energy levels and bowl quickly throughout the day. Spin bowlers focus on the technical aspect of their craft. This includes variations in grip and wrist position as well delivery stride. Both bowlers are focused on accuracy and consistency when it comes to hitting certain lengths.
