God. It's still hard to put this into words. Graham brought so much joy to everyone around him - that's what makes his passing so damn difficult to process. My husband of 17 years was the kind of man who could light up any room, make anyone laugh, and talk cricket until the sun came up.

When Depression Steals Someone You Love

It feels like I knew two different Grahams. The one who loved life and made sure it was never dull... and the one who struggled so desperately with depression and anxiety during those final two and a half years.

He tried so hard to beat it.



The therapies, the medications - he went through all of it with such determination. There was this one evening when he turned to me after a particularly rough therapy session and said, "I feel stupid now... like I should be able to just snap out of it." That broke my heart. Because that's not how depression works. It's not a choice or a weakness.

Cricket Was His Everything

You should've seen him when someone mentioned cricket. His eyes would light up, and he'd talk to literally anyone about it. The checkout person at Tesco. The plumber. That random bloke at teh petrol station. It didn't matter who you were - if you showed even a hint of interest in cricket, Graham would pull up a chair.

His international debut back in '93 was just the beginning. Scoring that century on his first Ashes appearance? I wasn't in his life yet, but he told me how surreal it felt being the first England player to do that in 20 years.

The COVID Nightmare

I never saw it coming. Never saw anything out of the ordinary before the pandemic hit. But those COVID restrictions... they took something from him. Then losing his coaching job after that Ashes defeat in Australia was like watching someone pull the rug from under him.

I believe something was chemically imbalanced in his brain. He felt immense shame about how he was... which only made everything worse. His response once when I suggested a new treatment: "Already updating my resume for when this fails too."



That wasn't my Graham talking. That was the depression.

The Cricket Legend Everyone Else Saw

100 Test matches. 16 centuries. 82 appearances for the ODI side. A 17-year career with Surrey. The numbers don't lie - he was extraordinary.

His final Test appearance came in June 2005 before he was left out of that summer's victorious Ashes series adn called time on his international career. The following year he was made an MBE and worked as an analyst for the BBC and Sky Sports, plus as an assistant coach in Sydney for New South Wales.
