Car Nut's Dream or Total Madness? $1.25M Apartment with NO Bedroom Hits Market at F1 Track

Holy moly. I just stumbled across what might be the most ridiculous (yet somehow tempting) real estate listing I've seen in years. And trust me, I've wasted countless hours on Zillow during boring conference calls.

So get this - there's a luxury apartment that just hit the market overlooking the Circuit of the Americas F1 track in Austin. Price tag? A cool £950,000, which translates to about $1.25 million for us Americans. The kicker? It literally has NO BEDROOM. None. Zero. Zilch.

Who exactly is this for?

That Time I Almost Bought Something Equally Ridiculous

Back in 2018, my buddy Jake (who has more money than sense) nearly convinced me to go halfsies on a vacation property that was basically just a glorified garage with a kitchenette. His argument: "But dude, we could store our mountain bikes there!" We'd been drinking. Thank god my wife called before I signed anything.

This COTA property reminds me of that near-disaster, except it's actually... kind of amazing? The photos show this sleek, modern 2,250 sq ft two-floor apartment with an open kitchen-living area and a fancy mezzanine. It's positioned right at turn 11 of teh track, which any F1 fan knows is prime viewing territory.

Wait, Where Do You Sleep??

Seriously though. One bathroom. No bedroom. I'm picturing some wealthy car collector just passing out on a leather couch after a day of watching races and drinking overpriced beer. Or maybe they expect you to sleep in one of your fancy cars?

Because that's the actual selling point here - the private garage with space for SIX TO EIGHT VEHICLES. That's not a typo. Eight cars! It even has its own charging area and remote doors. I showed my wife and she just stared at me with that "don't even think about it" look. Poor woman has put up with my car obsession for 12 years now.

The "Car Community" That Nobody Asked For

COTA is marketing this as part of their "T11 Car Community" - apparently "the only automotive enclave in North America located on a purpose-built Formula 1 track." An enclave! Like we're some persecuted minority that needs our own protected territory. Car guys, am I right?

Listen. I love cars as much as the next guy who spends too much time watching YouTube videos about engines. But this is next level.

So... You Just Never Sleep?

The more I think about it, the more this feels like some weird tax write-off scheme for people who own multiple Lamborghinis. Or maybe it's meant to be your "day apartment" where you hang out during race weekends before returning to your actual home with, you know, a bed.

They claim owners can "customise their units" or choose a "COTA Interior Upgrade with designer finishes and top-tier appliances." I'm assuming one of those customizations might be... adding a place to sleep?

My editor bet me $20 I couldn't write this entire article without making a "sleeping with your cars" joke. I just lost that bet.

The Perks (Beyond Housing Your Car Collection)

To be fair, the location does come with some cool perks. The property is apparently "just steps" from COTA's amphitheater, go-karting, mini-golf, and an upcoming amusement park. So after you've admired your car collection and watched some racing, you can... go mini-golfing?

I feel stupid now for not realizing this sooner, but maybe this is meant to be a sort of clubhouse/garage combo rather than an actual living space? That would make more sense.

The next USA Grand Prix happens October 19th this year. Just enough time to liquidate your retirement account and move in with your Ferrari collection.

Would I buy this if I had a spare million lying around? Probably not. But god help me, I'd be tempted. My wife's reaction when I showed her this listing: "Already updating my resume to find a better-paying job so I can divorce you when you inevitably try to buy something like this."

She knows me too well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the effects of weather conditions on Formula 1?

Weather conditions can impact Formula 1 races in a big way, including tire choice, setup of the car, and strategies. Rain can cause slippery conditions on the track, forcing drivers to change to intermediate or wet tires. Teams must adapt quickly to changes in conditions. Drivers need to show caution and skill. Temperature fluctuations can have an impact on engine performance as well as tire wear. This can drastically alter the course a race.

How do drivers qualify for a Formula 1 race?

Qualifying for a Formula 1 race is conducted through a knock-out system occurring the day before the race. The qualifying is divided into three sections - Q1,Q2, and Q3. In the first round, all drivers will compete. Five of the slowest cars in each class are eliminated. The top 15 cars then move to Q2, and another five are removed. The top 10 cars then proceed to Q3, in which they compete to win pole position and determine starting order.

How is Formula 1's world champion determined?

The Formula 1 World Champion can be determined by accumulating points over the course of the season. The points are awarded based on the drivers' finishing positions in each Grand Prix. Drivers who finish higher receive more points. At the season's end, the driver with the most points is crowned the World Champion. Constructors' championship is decided similarly by adding up all of the drivers' points.

What role does aerodynamics play within Formula 1?

Aerodynamics is crucial to Formula 1 as it affects drag and downforce. Downforce presses the car onto the track, which increases grip and allows drivers to maintain high speeds through corners without losing control. Teams dedicate extensive resources to refine aerodynamic performance in pursuit of every possible advantage over their competitors.

What is the difference between slick and wet tires in F1?

Formula 1 slick tires are designed to be used in dry conditions. Their smooth surface area allows for maximum contact with track surfaces, resulting in the best grip. Wet tires (intermediates and full-wets) have tread patterns designed to disperse the water on wet surfaces, reducing aquaplaning and providing traction during rainy conditions. The intermediates tire is used for light to moderate rainfall, and the full wet tire is suitable for heavy rainfall.

What is the job of a Formula 1 race engine?

A Formula 1 race engineer is pivotal in managing various aspects of the car and driver performance throughout a race weekend. They communicate constantly with drivers, giving them critical updates on strategy and information. They also coordinate with their team in the pits, making real-time decisions. The race engineer makes crucial calls on tire changes, car adjustments, and race tactics, all aimed at securing the best possible outcome for the team.

What is DRS Formula 1 and how does DRS work?

Drag Reduction System in Formula 1 helps to facilitate overtaking. It reduces aerodynamic resistance when it is activated. This gives the following car a temporary edge in speed. DRS can only be used in predetermined zones on the track and when a driver is within one second of the car ahead at specific detection points during the race.
