Ayr Showdown: The Full Rundown of Scottish Grand National Contenders for 2025

God. I've been up since 5am this morning going through my notes on this year's Scottish Grand National lineup. My coffee's gone cold twice already and my wife just texted asking if I'm "still obsessing over those horses." Yes, darling, I am.

The Scottish Grand National is finally upon us, folks. 23 magnificent beasts and their jockeys all vying for glory at Ayr. I've spent the last three days analyzing form, speaking with trainers, and yes, placing a cheeky £50 on what might be the worst bet of my career (more on that embarrassing choice later).

Willie Mullins: The Man Who Owns This Race

Let's address teh elephant in the room - Willie Mullins has FIVE runners in this race. FIVE! I spoke with a bookmaker friend yesterday who just sighed when I mentioned this. "He's going to clean us out again, isn't he?" was all he could muster.

Macdermott, last year's winner, returns under Danny Mullins. I watched that victory in 2024 from the stands, soaking wet because I'd forgotten my umbrella like the genius I am. The horse looked unstoppable then, and word around the stables is he's in even better form now.

My Ridiculous Dark Horse Pick

I've got a soft spot for outsiders. Back in 2018, I won nearly £2000 on a 33/1 shot that my wife had picked because she "liked the jockey's colors." Still haven't lived that down.

This year, I'm drawn to Grozni with Callum Pritchard aboard. James Owen isn't a name that dominates headlines, but I bumped into him at Cheltenham in February. His exact words after three pints: "Watch for Grozni in April. Been saving something special." Is this insider information or the ramblings of a trainer after a few beverages? We'll find out Saturday!

Who the hell is Klarc Kent?

Seriously though. Number 21 - Klarc Kent. That name can't be a coincidence. I've spent way too much time wondering if this horse can fly or has x-ray vision. My 9-year-old son is convinced it's the best horse in the race purely based on the Superman reference.

Jonathan Burke takes the ride for... you guessed it... Willie Mullins. The Irish maestro probably has a phone line direct to the winner's enclosure at this point.

The Numbers Game

For those of you planning to watch from the comfort of your sofa (smart move considering the weather forecast), here's your cheat sheet of runners and their numbers:

1 - Mr Incredible (Alice Stevens/Sandy Thomson)
2 - Henry's Friend (Ben Jones/Ben Pauling)
3 - Our Power (Dylan Johnston/Sam Thomas)
4 - Olympic Man (Patrick Mullins/Willie Mullins)
5 - Macdermott (Danny Mullins/Willie Mullins)
6 - Famous Bridge (Sean Quinlan/Nicky Richards)
7 - Captain Cody (Harry Cobden/Willie Mullins)
8 - Surrey Quest (Kevin Brogan/Toby Lawes)
9 - Chosen Witness (Sean O'Keeffe/Willie Mullins)
10 - Spanish Harlem (Brian Hayes/Willie Mullins)
11 - Hasthing (Jonjo O'Neill Jr/Jonjo & A J O'Neill)
12 - Rock My Way (Brendan Powell/Joe Tizzard)

And the rest of the field:

13 - Sail Away (Harry Skelton/Dan Skelton)
14 - Wiseguy (Nico de Boinville/Nicky Henderson)
15 - Flash De Touzaine (Sean Flanagan/Liz Doyle)
16 - Walking On Air (Richie McLemon/Faye Bramley)
17 - The Kniphand (Sam Twiston-Davies/Nigel Twiston-Davies)
18 - Grozni (Callum Pritchard/James Owen)
19 - Dom Of Mary (Caoilin Quinn/David Bridgwater)
20 - Snipe (Harry Atkins/Dan Skelton)
21 - Klarc Kent (Jonathan Burke/Willie Mullins)
22 - Magna Sam (Jonathan Burke/Alastair Ralph)
23 - Brandt (Sean Bowen/Cian Collins)

Wait - Jonathan Burke is down for both Klarc Kent AND Magna Sam? That can't be right... Let me check my notes again.

The Betting Confession

I mentioned a terrible bet earlier. Well, here it is. I've put money on Mr Incredible. Why? Because I met Alice Stevens at a charity function in January adn was so impressed by her knowledge and determination that I promised I'd back her next big race. The horse has about as much chance as I do of winning this race, but a promise is a promise.

My colleague Tom thinks I've lost the plot. His response when I told him: "already updating my resume to replace you as racing correspondent."

A Word About Responsibility

Listen. I love this sport with every fiber of my being. I've been covering racing for 12 years now. But I've also seen what happens when the excitement of a bet turns into something darker.

If you're having a flutter on the Scottish Grand National, remember the basics:

- Set a limit before you start and stick to it
- Only use money you can genuinely afford to lose
- Never, ever chase losses (I learned this one the hard way in 2019... nearly cost me my marriage)
- Don't bet when you're emotional or had a few too many

There are excellent resources out there if things get out of hand: Gamcare, GambleAware, and the National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133). You can also self-exclude through Gamstop.

Now, I'm off to second-guess all my predictions before tomorrow's race. May your horse stay upright and your wallet remain intact!
