Dubai World Cup 2025: The Obscene Money Behind Horse Racing's Middle East Spectacle

I've been covering horse racing for 7 years now, and I still can't wrap my head around the ridiculous money sloshing around in these Middle Eastern races. While most of us are scraping together enough cash for a decent Saturday night out, these horses are running for more money than I'll see in three lifetimes.

Tonight's Dubai World Cup is about to kick off with 11 horses competing for a prize that makes teh Grand National look like pocket change. And yes, I'll be watching both – my wife thinks I have a problem.

Aintree vs. Meydan: A Tale of Two Racing Worlds

Everyone back home is obsessing over Aintree and the Grand National this afternoon. Fair enough. It's tradition. It's history. It's £1 million up for grabs.

But once that's done, the real money show begins.

The global racing elite will shift their attention to Meydan Racecourse faster than my brother-in-law moves toward an open bar. Only the Saudi Cup and The Everest offer bigger purses than what we're about to see in Dubai.

I was in Dubai back in 2019 covering this event. The opulence is... unsettling. Gold-plated everything. Men in suits worth more than my car. Women wearing jewelry that could pay off my mortgage.

When Can You Watch This Madness?

If you're planning your Saturday around this (no judgment, I certainly am), here's what you need to know:

Racing kicks off at 1:35pm UK time, but the main event – the reason anyone's tuning in – starts at 6:30pm BST at Meydan Racecourse.

Listen. I've been to Meydan. It's like someone gave an architect unlimited funds and said "make it look like aliens with excellent taste designed a horse racing venue." The place is stunning.

The Money. Dear God, The Money.

Across the nine races today, there's $30.5 million (about £23m) at stake. That's more than the annual budget of the small town I grew up in.

The Dubai World Cup itself? A colossal $12 million pot (roughly £9.29m). For perspective, that makes the Grand National's £1 million look like what I spend on coffee each month.

My editor bet me $20 I couldn't write this article without using the word "obscene" at least three times when describing the prize money. I feel stupid now for taking that bet.

Show Me The Breakdown!

Here's exactly how that $12 million gets carved up:

1st place: $6,960,000
2nd place: $2,400,000
3rd place: $1,200,000
4th place: $600,000
5th place: $360,000
6th place: $240,000
7th place: $120,000
8th place: $120,000

Even coming in LAST in this race nets you more money than most people make in two years. Poor 8th place finisher, only walking away with $120K for losing... how will they cope?

Who's Running? (And Who Might Actually Win This Thing)

Forever Young is the name on everyone's lips. After snagging the Saudi Cup in February, a win here would push his career earnings over $21 million. That's a horse earning more than most Premier League footballers.

I watched Forever Young's Saudi Cup win from a bar in London. Some guy next to me spilled his entire pint when the finish happened. His response: "already updating my resume to become a horse."

The complete lineup, which might change because... racing:

1. Forever Young
2. Hit Show
3. Il Miracolo
4. Imperial Emperor
5. Katonah
6. Mixto
7. Ramjet
8. Rattle N'Roll
9. Ushba Tesoro
10. Walk of Stars
11. Wilson Tesoro

I've got $50 on Ushba Tesoro, which probably means he'll finish dead last. My betting history is like a masterclass in how to lose money creatively.

Anyway, I'll be watching with a cheap beer while these magnificent animals run for more money than I'll see in my lifetime. Racing, eh?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do racehorses breed and select for racing?

Racehorses tend to be bred for the purpose of winning races. Breeders look for sires or dams that have proven racing pedigrees. They want to breed offspring with the best qualities of speed, endurance and temperament. Thoroughbreds tend to be associated with UK racing, and their lines are carefully tracked. Two or more horses crossing the finish line at the same time can result in a photo finish.' This is because it's difficult to see the winner. Officials can accurately determine the order of finish by using the photo finish image.

What is the function of a racecourse steward?

Stewards are responsible for ensuring that all horse racing is conducted in a fair and legal manner, according to the racing rules. In UK horse racing, the handicap system is designed to give every horse an equal chance of winning a race. In essence, the weights that horses carry in a race are determined by their previous performances. Better horses carry heavier loads to even the playing field for horses with less impressive past performances. In the UK, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is responsible for handicapping.
