Holy Crap! Gracchus De Balme Stuns Everyone in Aintree's Foxhunters' Chase

Jesus. I've been covering the Aintree Festival for seven years now, and I STILL get that rush when a 22/1 longshot crosses the line first. My colleague Pete (who thinks he knows everything about racing) was so confident this one wouldn't place that he's now £50 poorer. Sorry mate!

Gracchus De Balme absolutely stormed home in today's Foxhunters' Chase, leaving punters either ecstatic or tearing up their betting slips. I was in the latter camp, unfortunately. Had a tenner on Lifetime Ambition which... well, didn't quite live up to its name today, finishing third.

The "I Should've Bet More" Results

1 Gracchus De Balme 22/1

2 Jet Plane 11/1

3 Lifetime Ambition 5/1

4 My Drogo 5/1

If you backed the winner, I hate you right now. But also, congrats.

The atmosphere at Aintree today was electric. Got soaked in champagne by some banker-types celebrating a win in the earlier races. Not complaining - it was Moët.

What Else Happened on Day 1?

Before I forget - Impaire Et Passe took the Manifesto Novices' Chase, Murcia won the Juvenile Hurdle, Gaelic Warrior dominated the Aintree Bowl, and Lossiemouth (which I actually backed, thank god) won the Aintree Hurdle.

I spent £120 on drinks and food today. Racing isn't cheap, folks.

Still Two More Days of This Madness

Listen. If you're planning to head to Aintree tomorrow or Saturday, bring a jacket. I froze my ass off today because the weather forecast lied to me. Again.

Here's what's coming up for the rest of the festival:

Friday, April 4

1:45pm: Mildmay Novices' Chase
2:20pm: William Hill Handicap Hurdle
2:55pm: Top Novices' Hurdle
3:30pm: Melling Chase
4:05pm: Topham Handicap Chase
4:40pm: Sefton Novices' Hurdle
5:15pm: Hallgarten and Novum Wines Handicap Hurdle

And then Saturday brings us the big one.

Saturday, April 5

1:20pm: William Hill Handicap Hurdle
1:55pm: Mersey Novices' Hurdle
2:30pm: Freebooter Handicap Chase
3:05pm: Liverpool Hurdle
4pm: Grand National
5pm: Maghull Novices' Chase
5:35pm: Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race

Don't Be That Guy Who Loses His House

I watched a bloke back in 2018 lose £2,000 on a single race. His wife called during his meltdown. He told her he was "just having a beer with the lads." Poor woman.

Remember to gamble responsibly, yeah? That means:

• Set limits before you start (time AND money)
• Only gamble what you can afford to lose
• Never chase losses (I've made this mistake... more than once)
• Don't bet when you're emotional or drunk (also guilty)
• Use Gamcare or GambleAware if things get out of hand

I'll be back tomorrow with more updates. Probably with a hangover, let's be honest.

For anyone struggling with gambling issues, call the National Gambling Helpline: 0808 8020 133. No judgment - teh racing world can be overwhelming sometimes.

How does handicapping work in horse racing

How do horse racing betting odds work?

The odds of winning a horse race bet reflect the probability that a specific outcome will occur. They are typically presented in the format of fractions or decimals and can indicate how much profit a bettor might gain on a winning bet. Odds may fluctuate according to how much is bet on each horse. They can also change before the race starts. A seasoned betting will pay attention to these changes so that they can make informed wagers.
