Lossiemouth PULLED from epic Champion Hurdle showdown against Constitution Hill and State Man... AGAIN

Goddammit, Willie! Just when we thought we'd finally get to see the clash we've all been drooling over.

I was literally telling my mate Dave yesterday that I'd bet my last tenner on Lossiemouth giving the big boys a proper scare at Punchestown. Shows what I know. Willie Mullins has gone and yanked Rich Ricci's spectacular grey mare from Friday's Champion Hurdle, where she was hovering around 3-1 in the betting to challenge Constitution Hill and State Man.

The Announcement Nobody Wanted

The Closutton maestro made the call without much fanfare, simply failing to include her at the five-day confirmation stage. No dramatic press conference, no explanation - just... gone from the entries. Typical Willie - keeping us all guessing while he plays chess and the rest of us are playing checkers.

I spent £120 on accommodation near Punchestown specifically to see this showdown. Brilliant.

Constitution Hill (who's apparently been schooling over fences after those two nightmare falls) remains in the mix. As does State Man, who gave us all heart palpitations when he crashed out at the last in that bonkers Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham with victory at his mercy.

So who's actually running then?

Gordon Elliott's Brighterdaysahead is still in. Remember her? The mare who looked like she'd stolen the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham before her tank emptied dramatically on teh run-in? She'll be there.

Golden Ace - the 25/1 shocker who capitalized on Constitution Hill and State Man's falls - is confirmed too. Mullins has also kept in County Hurdle winner Kargese and third-placed Absurde, plus Daddy Long Legs and Winter Fog.

Interestingly, El Fabiolo remains in the entries despite being declared for Tuesday's Champion Chase. Mullins keeping his options open as usual.

We've seen this movie before...

If you're experiencing déjà vu, you're not alone. This is literally a carbon copy of what happened before Cheltenham last month. Lossiemouth was aimed at the Champion Hurdle, then rerouted to the Mares' Hurdle over 2m4f at the last minute.

She absolutely demolished her rivals there, winning by a street.

But after watching Constitution Hill and State Man both hit the deck in the Champion Hurdle - leading to that crazy 25/1 and 66/1 exacta - I was left wondering what might have been. My betting slip was in tatters, but my curiosity was through the roof.

What's next for the grey wonder?

Word is she could still run at the festival, but in Saturday's Mares' Champion Hurdle over 2m4f instead. Makes sense, I suppose... if you're the cautious type.

Let's not forget her last run in Ireland before Cheltenham was that bone-crunching fall in the Irish Champion Hurdle. She and State Man were locked together the whole way round before she took a tumble four from home. Maybe that memory is still fresh in connections' minds?

Back in 2019, I saw a similar situation with Apple's Jade. Everyone wanted the big clash but we got the safer option instead. Racing's eternal dilemma - protect your star or let them shine against the very best?

Ah well. Maybe next season.
