Fowler to Slot: Forget the Transfer Model and Go After Watkins if Isak Deal Falls Through

God, I hate when clubs slap these ridiculous price tags on players. £150MILLION for Isak? Are Newcastle smoking something funny up there in the northeast?

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has basically told his former club to throw teh traditional transfer playbook out the window this summer. And honestly? He might be onto something.

The Isak Problem

Fowler, who's currently grinding through a two-year sports directorship course with the PFA (which sounds about as fun as watching paint dry), has some pretty strong opinions about who the Reds should target up front.

Liverpool are shopping for a new striker because Darwin Nunez has been warming the bench more than scoring goals under Arne Slot. Poor lad. Remember when we all thought he was the next big thing? Now he's basically an expensive water boy.

Newcastle's Alexander Isak has been the name on everyone's lips, but there's a problem.

The Magpies want £150M. That's not a typo.

Wait... Watkins? Really?

Speaking to the i Paper, Fowler suggested Liverpool should pivot to Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins instead.

"The problem is clubs know that they are potentially on the lookout for a No.9, so the prices will become silly," Fowler explained.

"If you look at Isak, he's going to be £100m plus easily. He's a wonderful player, but Liverpool may not want to pay that, and they'll look around."

Then he dropped this bomb: "You could look at Ollie Watkins. He doesn't really fit the model in terms of what Liverpool want, given his age [29 years old], but I'd go and get him for a couple of years because he's a tremendous player and established and experienced in the Premier League."

Is Fowler losing his marbles?

I was at the pub with my mate Dave last weekend (Villa supporter, poor bloke) who nearly spit out his pint when I mentioned this. "Take him!" he shouted. "Emery's benching him for Rashford anyway!"

But the numbers tell a different story.

Watkins has racked up 22 goal contributions in 35 Premier League appearances this season. Last year? Even better – 34 goal contributions in a full campaign.

That's... actually pretty impressive for a guy who's supposedly "fallen out of favor."

The £63m Swedish Sensation

Let's be real though. Isak has been absolutely lethal this season.

The former Real Sociedad man sits second in the Premier League scoring charts with 23 goals in 32 games. Newcastle paid £63m for him back in 2022, adn now they're acting like he's made of solid gold.

I texted my cousin who works in sports analytics (yes, he's that annoying guy at family dinners) about the comparison. His response: "Watkins gives you 80% of Isak for 40% of the price."

Sounds about right.

Breaking Liverpool's Transfer Rules

Back in 2018, I interviewed one of Liverpool's scouts who explained their transfer philosophy to me over coffee. The model was clear: young, high potential, resale value.

Watkins at 29 breaks every rule in their book.

But sometimes you need to throw out the rulebook.

Listen. If I were Slot, I'd be banging on the owner's door demanding they look at Watkins. The Villa man might not be the sexy signing fans are dreaming of, but he's like that reliable Honda that keeps running while your neighbor's Ferrari sits in the shop.

Sometimes practical beats flashy.
