From Goalposts to Field Goals: My Chat with the 6'7" Austrian Who's Trading Football for Football

I've seen some weird career pivots in my time (remember when Vinnie Jones went from crunching tackles to, uh, crunching skulls in Hollywood?), but this one takes teh cake.

Stefan Maierhofer – that towering Austrian striker who briefly terrorized Premier League defenses at Wolves – has decided at 42 that kicking round balls isn't challenging enough anymore. American football is his new game. The Vienna Vikings, to be precise.

Wait... Isn't He Like 8 Feet Tall?

Ok, he's "only" 6'7", but still. I remember watching him at Molineux back in 2009 and thinking he looked like someone had stretched a regular footballer in Photoshop. Gangly doesn't begin to describe it.

The man scored just once in 10 games for Wolves before they shipped him out. Not exactly prolific. Then again, Mick McCarthy's Wolves weren't exactly Barcelona, were they?

Maierhofer bounced around after that – Bristol City loan, Millwall stint, even played for Bayern Munich as a youngster (though mainly their reserves, let's be honest). His career was like one of those European interrail journeys where you spend one night in each city before moving on.

So... American Football? REALLY?

I had to read the press release twice. The Vienna Vikings compete in something called the European League of Football. They actually won the championship in 2022, which I had absolutely no idea existed until writing this article.

Maierhofer's going to be a kicker. Makes sense – that's the only position where his previous career has any relevance whatsoever.

God. Imagine being a 5'10" cornerback and seeing this human skyscraper lining up a field goal.

The Man Himself Sounds Weirdly Convinced

"From my first minute at the club I was clear in my mind that I wanted to join them," Maierhofer explained. "Everyone from the owner down to the equipment manager speaks with one voice."

He's even been training with Giorgio Tavecchio, a former NFL kicker. That's... actually pretty smart. If you're gonna make a ridiculous career switch at 42, might as well learn from someone who knows what they're doing.

His goal? "I want to reach the 2025 final with the Vikings, and play in front of 50,000 American football fans."

Ambitious. I like it.

The Vikings Think They've Struck Gold

Chris Calaycay (their head coach) couldn't hide his excitement. "Stefan is a very tall man, extremely popular, and with a unique body language." Well, that's one way of putting it. I'd have gone with "moves like a baby giraffe learning to walk," but I'm not running a professional sports team.

Apparently the transition from soccer ball to football is going "tremendously well." I've tried kicking both, and let me tell you – back in 2018 I attempted a field goal at a friend's backyard party and nearly broke my toe. Cost me $80 in urgent care fees adn endless mockery from my buddies.

Not The First Failed Experiment

The Vikings' owner Robin Lumsden dropped an interesting nugget: "A number of prominent footballers wanted to play for us, and many found the trials difficult."

Now I'm dying to know which other soccer players secretly tried out and failed. Was Wayne Rooney attempting to be a linebacker? Peter Crouch as a wide receiver? The possibilities are endless.

Listen. I'm genuinely rooting for the big man. There's something weirdly inspiring about a 42-year-old former Premier League player deciding to completely switch sports.

Maybe I should reconsider my own athletic career... though my editor just looked over my shoulder and said "stick to typing." Fair enough.
