I Almost Lost My Damn Thumb – Tuanzebe Opens Up Before Chelsea Showdown

Some days I wake up and think, "Thank god I still have all my fingers." Not the typical morning thought for most footballers, but Axel Tuanzebe isn't living through your typical season.

The Ipswich defender nearly lost his thumb in what has to be the most ridiculous kitchen accident in Premier League history. Washing dishes. WASHING DISHES. Not a crunching tackle or a training ground collision—just a man trying to clean up after dinner.

When Domestic Chores Attack

Tuanzebe and his Ipswich teammates head to Stamford Bridge today knowing even a miracle win against Chelsea won't exactly transform their relegation battle. But for the 27-year-old former Manchester United man, just being on teh pitch feels like a victory after September's freakish incident.

"It wasn't a minor issue, it was quite serious," Tuanzebe told me yesterday, showing a slight grimace when the topic came up. "The club have been very supportive, the medical staff in particular."

I noticed he unconsciously flexed his hand while talking about it.

"I'm just grateful that I still have my thumb intact."

Surgery, Scars and... Hungry Hippos?

Town manager Kieran McKenna revealed back in the fall that Tuanzebe required surgery to repair severed tendons in the thumb. Not exactly the kind of injury report you expect to read on the Premier League website.

But here's the kicker—this wasn't just any thumb. This was the thumb of a WORLD RECORD HOLDER.

Yep. Back in 2018, Tuanzebe cleared a Hungry Hippos game in 17.36 seconds. Fastest. Ever. Time.

My 8-year-old nephew would be impressed. Hell, I'm impressed.

From Record Books to Medical Charts

When I asked if he'd tried to reclaim his Hungry Hippos glory during recovery, he laughed. "It cost me a few games this season and I want to make up for it," he said, clearly more focused on football than plastic tabletop games.

The injury sidelined him for months. Months! From washing dishes!

What's Next for Thumbelina?

With his contract expiring this summer, there's another finger-related issue looming—will he be putting his signature on a new deal with the Tractor Boys?

"This club has always been good in sorting things out in good time. I'm sure they'll do that come the summer," he said with the kind of diplomatic answer that tells you absolutely nothing while sounding perfectly reasonable.

I spent $75 on a Hungry Hippos set after our interview. Just to see if I could beat 17.36 seconds. I couldn't even come close. Turns out it's harder than it looks... especially when you're trying not to spill your coffee at the same time.

For now, Tuanzebe just wants to move forward. "It's OK now thanks to a good doctor and now it is time to crack on and knuckle down for the season."

Knuckle down. The man nearly loses a thumb and still makes hand puns. Legend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some of the best ways to defend against a team with a high offensive level?

It is important to have a disciplined strategy when defending against an offensively strong team. A disciplined marking system and an organized defensive line are key tactics. By forcing the opposing attackers to the sides instead of the center, you can reduce their chances of scoring. It is also important to have good communication between the defenders, and make quick changes from offense to defense if possession is lost. The offensive team can use counter-attacking tactics to exploit any gaps created by the defensive team's commitment.

What is the importance of a footballer's nutrition and diet?

The nutrition of football players is essential to their performance and recovery. A balanced diet containing the proper combination of carbohydrates (carbohydrates), proteins, fats (fats), vitamins, and mineral is required for energy production, muscle recovery, and overall health. Dehydration can also significantly affect physical performance. Timing of meals and specific nutrition strategies can vary depending on training and match schedules, and it is often beneficial to consult with a sports nutritionist to develop personalized dietary plans.

How do you become a good football goalkeeper?

Becoming an excellent goalkeeper requires special training that focuses on agility, positioning, and reflexes. A goalkeeper should be proficient in stopping shots, commanding the penalty area with catching and punching skills, and distributing both with hands and feet. Goalkeeping also requires mental resilience, the ability to make decisions under pressure and good communication with defense. To master the art, you must practice regularly, get constructive feedback from your coaches and analyze your performances to identify improvement areas.

How can my football technique be improved?

For you to improve your football skills, it is essential that you practice regularly and concentrate on the basics. Drills that help improve ball-control, accurate passing and precise shots are vital. Spending time perfecting your less-skilled foot and improving balance through agility exercises can greatly improve your technique. Studying professional footballers, analyzing their positioning, movements and decisions, can also provide valuable insight.

Explain the offside rule to me.

The offside rule is a fundamental aspect of football aimed at preventing players from gaining an unfair advantage. Offside is when a player's head, body or feet are in the opposite team's side of the field, closer to their opponent's goal than the ball, and also the next-to-last player (typically, the last player on the outfield) at the time the ball is passed to them. Note that being offside does not constitute a violation unless a player takes part in the match, gains an edge, or interferes against an opponent.

Statistics

  • Goalkeepers who engage in specialized reaction-time training reduce their goals-conceded tally by an average of 25% over a season.
  • Players who train for more than 10 hours a week show a 20% improvement in technique compared to those who train for less time.
  • A consistent mental focus regimen, including visualization techniques, can enhance player concentration levels by up to 20% during matches.
  • Players with a balanced diet containing adequate macronutrients have a 30% lower injury rate than those with less balanced nutritional habits.
