Leeds Just Let a Formula One Car Tear Up Their Pitch (And I'm Here for It)

Look, I've seen some wild publicity stunts in my time covering football, but this one takes the cake.

Leeds United – fresh off winning the Championship and heading back to the Premier League – decided it would be brilliant to let a Red Bull Formula One car loose on their Elland Road pitch. Because apparently winning promotion wasn't exciting enough. They needed to add some actual horsepower to the mix.

When Sponsorship Deals Get Weird

Here's how this madness unfolded: Red Bull sponsors Leeds (among about a million other things), and someone at last year's British Grand Prix at Silverstone had what I can only describe as either a stroke of genius or a moment of complete insanity. The players – bless their hearts – actually thought they could outrun a Formula One car if you threw in a few obstacles.

Spoiler alert: they were wrong.

Willy Gnonto, Largie Ramazani, and Isaac Schmidt lined up against F2 driver Arvid Lindblad in his RB7. The setup was simple enough – start at one penalty box, weave around some mannequins at the other end, race back. Easy, right?

The Grass Wasn't Having It

Here's where it gets good. Lindblad, who probably dominates on tarmac, had an absolute nightmare trying to get his wheels spinning on grass. For a brief, beautiful moment, it looked like the footballers might actually pull this off. They were neck-and-neck approaching those mannequins, and the car's turning circle gave the players a real shot.

But physics is a cruel mistress. Once Lindblad figured out how to handle the grass (and the players started getting tired), that car just... roared past them. Won by about 30 yards in the end.

What Were They Thinking?

Ramazani, who's apparently a massive F1 fan, said afterwards: "This was a great experience, the only thing better would be getting in the car." He also threw some shade at his injured teammate Dan James, claiming DJ would've "smoked this car." Sure, Largie. Sure.

Meanwhile, Lindblad admitted he was "a bit nervous" about driving on grass. Smart man – I would've been terrified about getting that thing stuck in a divot.

The whole thing included a slalom challenge too, because why not completely destroy the pitch while you're at it?

The Groundskeeper's Nightmare

I can only imagine the groundstaff watching this unfold. Tyre marks everywhere, grass torn up, and their pristine pitch looking like a motocross track.

But here's the kicker – they're probably ripping up and replacing the whole pitch anyway for their Premier League return. So maybe this was just Leeds giving their old Championship-winning surface one last hurrah before it gets the boot.

Still doesn't make it any less mental, though.

Sometimes I love this sport for all the wrong reasons.
