Lyon Stuck with Unwanted Keeper in Transfer Nightmare That Nobody Asked For

God, what a mess.

So Lyon are basically being forced to sign Matt Turner from Nottingham Forest even though they don't want him anymore. Like, at all. It's one of those situations where you agree to something months ago and then everything changes but you're legally stuck with it. Been there with a gym membership, but this is £7million we're talking about.

When Your Boss Makes Deals and Then Bails

Here's what happened: Back when John Textor was still running things at Lyon (before he peaced out at the end of June), he shook hands with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis on this Turner deal. Seemed like a good idea at teh time, I guess. Turner had just helped Palace win the FA Cup on loan, so why not?

But then Textor stepped down from his leadership roles. And suddenly Lyon's new management looked at this deal like "wait, we agreed to WHAT now?"

They even hired a lawyer to try and cancel the whole thing. That's desperation right there. When you're paying legal fees to get OUT of a transfer, you know something went sideways.

The $7M Problem Nobody Wants

L'equipe broke the story that Lyon tried everything to wiggle out of this. But contracts are contracts, and Forest wasn't budging. So now they're stuck giving Turner a three-year deal for a keeper they never actually wanted in the first place.

Poor Matt Turner. Imagine finding out your new club literally tried to hire lawyers to avoid signing you. That's gotta sting.

The 31-year-old American is probably thinking "well, this is awkward" as he signs papers with people who actively didn't want him there.

Lyon's Summer from Hell

This Turner situation is just the cherry on top of Lyon's disaster sundae. They almost got relegated to Ligue 2 because of financial problems (thankfully overturned), and half their squad has already bolted for the exits.

Rayan Cherki went to Man City for serious money. Lucas Perri headed to Leeds. Said Benrahma's loan to Neom became permanent. Thiago Almada's loan ended and he immediately got sold to Atletico Madrid. Even young Malick Fofana is being linked with Everton moves.

It's like watching a garage sale where everything must go.

The MLS Escape Plan

Lyon's solution? Ship Turner straight back to MLS before he even unpacks. He's going on loan to New England Revolution - his old club - for the entire season. Revolution will cover his wages and get an option to make it permanent.

So basically Lyon is paying £7million for the privilege of... not having Matt Turner play for them. Makes perfect sense.

Meanwhile, Palace is Still Fighting

All this drama stems from Textor's ownership mess that got Crystal Palace kicked out of the Europa League. UEFA said his multi-club ownership violated their "integrity" rules, which sounds fancy but basically means you can't own pieces of multiple clubs in the same competition.

Palace chairman Steve Parish called it "the biggest injustice in the history of sport," which might be a bit dramatic but I get his frustration. They're taking it to the Court of Arbitration for Sport next week (August 8th, specifically).

The whole thing is a three-way legal battle between Palace, UEFA, adn bizarrely, both Nottingham Forest and Lyon. Forest gets bumped up to Europa League if Palace loses their appeal, so they're invested in this outcome too.

Ironically, Palace and Forest play each other at Selhurst Park on August 24th. Talk about awkward small talk before kickoff.

What a beautiful disaster this whole situation turned out to be.
