Pompey clear-out: FIVE players shown the door as Championship safety secured

Well, bloody hell. The end-of-season cull has begun at Fratton Park, and it's not pretty for some familiar faces.

Portsmouth have wasted absolutely no time in wielding the axe after making sure they'll be playing Championship football next season. Five players are now looking for new clubs, including former Arsenal man Cohen Bramall who only arrived in January. Talk about a short honeymoon period.

Listen Now

Who's packing their bags?

The departing crew includes Cohen Bramall, Tom Lowery, Alexander Milošević, Anthony Scully and Kusini Yengi - all told their services won't be required when pre-season kicks off.

I watched Yengi during that magical League One title-winning campaign last year. Gutted for him, honestly.

On top of that clear-out, the loan brigade of Adil Aouchiche, Rob Atkinson, Kaide Gordon, Isaac Hayden, Freddie Potts and Mark O'Mahony are all heading back to their parent clubs. That's basically an entire team's worth of players gone in one swoop!

The gaffer speaks...

John Mousinho - who's done a solid job keeping Pompey up this season - tried to sound diplomatic about the departures. He said: "We would like to thank all those players leaving the club for their service and wish them nothing but the best for the next stage of their careers.

"Kusini played a massive part in our memorable League One title success just over a year ago, while Anthony and Tom are both model professionals who I enjoyed working with greatly."

Reading between teh lines there... some tough decisions had to be made.

From Arsenal to unemployment

Bramall's story is particularly interesting. Remember when Arsenal plucked him from non-league obscurity back in 2017? Seemed like a fairy tale.

Turns out the 29-year-old only signed a six-month deal when joining Pompey in January. Brutal business, football.

His Arsenal dream never quite materialized - 21 appearances for the U23s but never made it to the first team. Since then it's been a journey through Birmingham (loan), Colchester, Lincoln, Rotherham and now Portsmouth.

And now he's looking for club number... what is it, seven? Eight?

Summer rebuild incoming?

With 11 players heading out the door, you've got to think Pompey are planning a significant rebuild this summer. I spoke to a mate who's a season ticket holder last night and he reckons they need at least 6-7 new faces just to maintain the squad depth.

The Championship is an absolute beast of a division. Just surviving is an achievement.

What next for those shown the door?

League One beckons for most, I reckon. Though Bramall might find another Championship club willing to take a punt on his pace and crossing ability.

Football can be so cruel sometimes.

One minute you're celebrating a League One title (like Yengi was in 2023), the next you're scanning the free agent lists and hoping your agent's phone rings.

This story is still developing, with more details likely to emerge about Portsmouth's summer plans in the coming days.
