Posh Keeper Steer Tears Up Contract in Shock Exit - 'Personal Reasons' Behind Departure

Well, damn. Another day, another footballer making a surprise exit. This time it's former Premier League shot-stopper Jed Steer who's walked away from Peterborough United after asking the club to rip up his contract.

I've seen some abrupt departures in my time covering League One, but this one caught me off guard.

Hear the Summary

From Villa Park to... nowhere?

Steer, who spent a decade at Aston Villa before joining Posh in January last year, apparently approached club officials requesting they "cancel" the final year of his deal. The club's terse statement only cited "personal reasons" behind the 32-year-old's decision to leave.

Let's be honest - that phrase usually covers a multitude of situations. Family issues? Better offer elsewhere? We may never know.

I remember watching him make those two crucial penalty saves against Wrexham in the EFL Trophy semi-final back in February. The crowd went absolutely mental. Poor Wrexham players looked shell-shocked as he dove correctly twice in a row. At that moment, nobody could've predicted he'd be gone before the summer transfer window even opened.

The Wembley hero who vanished

The timing feels strange. Steer had established himself as Peterborough's number one, making 28 appearances this season and helping them lift the EFL Trophy at Wembley after beating Birmingham City.

Back-to-back trophy wins at Wembley don't happen often for clubs at this level. You'd think that would cement his place.

I texted a contact at the club yesterday who simply replied: "Came out of nowhere. Dressing room as surprised as anyone."

Where did it all begin?

For those who don't know Steer's background (and honestly, why would you unless you're a Norwich or Villa fan?), he started his career with the Canaries back in 2009. Spent six years in their academy before that.

Only two senior appearances though. Two! After all that time.

His career has been... let's call it nomadic. Loans at Yeovil Town, Cambridge United, Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield, Charlton and Luton. The life of a backup keeper isn't glamorous - I interviewed one back in 2018 who told me he'd spent more time warming benches than some furniture salesmen.

The Villa years that weren't really Villa years

Villa signed him in 2013, but in ten years he managed just 36 appearances. That's roughly 3.6 games per season. Hardly the Premier League dream, is it?

I still remember his performance against Wolves in 2019 when Villa were pushing for promotion. Absolute masterclass. For a brief moment, it looked like he might establish himself as their first choice.

Didn't happen.

What happens next?

At 32, Steer should be entering his prime years as a goalkeeper. Most keepers don't hit their peak until their mid-30s (unlike us mere mortals who peak at 27 then spend teh next decade wondering where it all went wrong).

Will another League One club take a punt? Could he drop down to League Two? Or is this the end of his professional career altogether?

Whatever's happening in his personal life, I hope it works out for him. Football careers are short enough without cutting them shorter.

Sometimes we forget these are actual humans with lives beyond the pitch. Not just names on teamsheets or fantasy football selections.

I've seen too many players vanish from the game entirely after similar exits. One day they're saving penalties at Wembley, the next they're... who knows where.

Peterborough now face the challenge of finding a new number one before the season kicks off in August. Not an enviable position with pre-season training just weeks away.

Life goes on, I suppose.
