Sterling's Chelsea Nightmare: The Deadline Day Scramble Nobody Saw Coming

Here we go again.

Another deadline day, another Chelsea player getting tossed around like a hot potato. This time it's Raheem Sterling – and honestly, I'm starting to feel bad for the guy. The 30-year-old winger is basically persona non grata at Stamford Bridge, despite having a whole year left on what I'm guessing is a pretty hefty contract.

Listen to the Summary

Fulham? Really?

So apparently Fulham are sniffing around Sterling now. Fabrizio Romano dropped this little nugget earlier today, claiming the Cottagers see him as "an option." An option! Not even their first choice – just... an option. That's got to sting a bit if you're Sterling.

The thing is, Fulham are actually chasing three different attackers right now. Their main target is some Brazilian kid called Kevin from Shakhtar Donetsk (yeah, just Kevin – love that). They've supposedly agreed a £34.6m fee but the player hasn't said yes yet. Then there's Samuel Chukwueze from AC Milan floating around as another possibility.

Poor Sterling is basically third on a list of Plan B's.

The Arsenal Experiment That Kinda Worked

Last summer's loan to Arsenal wasn't exactly a disaster, but it wasn't exactly inspiring either. And here's the kicker – Chelsea still had to subsidize his wages! So they basically paid for him to play against them in the Premier League. Only Chelsea could manage that level of financial gymnastics.

Now they're scrambling again with hours left on teh clock, desperately trying to find someone – anyone – willing to take Sterling off their hands.

Marco Silva is NOT Happy

Meanwhile, Fulham manager Marco Silva has been pretty vocal about his club's lack of transfer activity this summer. And when I say vocal, I mean he's been throwing some serious shade at the board.

"We have to (sign players). This is the situation," he said last week. "It's because we don't have other solutions."

Translation: "Give me some bloody players or stop expecting miracles."

Fulham have literally signed one player this summer – backup goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte. One! No wonder Silva's getting antsy.

The Domino Effect Nobody Asked For

But wait, there's more chaos brewing at Chelsea. Nicolas Jackson's move to Bayern Munich got cancelled over the weekend because of some injury to Liam Delap (honestly, keeping track of Chelsea's transfer dealings is like following a soap opera). Now they've apparently told Bayern to go ahead and complete the deal anyway.

Except Newcastle have also jumped in for Jackson because... why not make things more complicated?

Sterling hasn't even kicked a ball this season under Enzo Maresca. The manager's clearly decided that Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, and some kid named Estevao are better options. Ouch.

Napoli Lurking in teh Shadows

Oh, and Napoli are supposedly interested too. Because nothing says "I want to revive my career" like moving to Serie A at 30.

Any club that does sign Sterling will probably want the same deal Arsenal got – Chelsea paying a chunk of his wages while he scores against them. It's almost poetic in its stupidity.

With just hours left until the window slams shut, Sterling's sitting there waiting for his phone to ring. From England international to deadline day afterthought in the space of a few years.

Football's brutal sometimes.

In the Premier League the Video Assistant Referee System (VAR) is used to help on-field referees make the right decisions in cases such as goals, penalty decisions and direct red cards. The system's goal is to minimize any human errors that may affect the result of a game.

How is the Premier League determined?

The Premier League winner is the team with the most points during the 38-game regular season. Teams earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. If both teams end the season on the same number points, the champion will be determined based on the goal differential and if required, by the number of goals. If there is still a tie, the winner may be decided by a playoff, which can take place at a neutral location. This scenario, however, has never happened in Premier League history.
