Strap in for a Goals Bonanza When Liverpool Face Chelsea – Weekend Wager's Hot Picks

Alright folks, I've spent the last three days drowning in stats sheets and match replays for this one. My wife thinks I've gone completely mental – "It's just football," she says. If she only knew how much coffee I've burned through...

SUNSPORT'S Weekend Wager is back with a vengeance, and this time we're dissecting that mouth-watering clash between the newly-crowned champions Liverpool and a Chelsea side desperate for European football. God, I love these end-of-season fixtures when one team's celebrating and the other's fighting for their lives.

I've dragged in football journalist Kweku Afari and Betfair's own James Mackie to help me (Will Pugh) make sense of the betting chaos. These lads know their stuff – Kweku once correctly predicted the exact minute of a Salah goal at a house party and hasn't shut up about it since.

Hear the Summary

Sunday's Anfield Shootout Could Get Messy

Let's cut to the chase. Liverpool just wrapped up the title against Spurs (my neighbor, a die-hard Spurs fan, hasn't answered my texts since) and Chelsea are scrambling for Champions League spots like it's the last helicopter out of Saigon.

Kweku's going big on goals – Over 3.5 at 5/4. "Liverpool have scored in their last 30 Premier League matches," he points out, while reminding me that Chelsea's defense against top-six sides at home has been about as effective as a chocolate teapot since August.

I'm actually backing Chelsea at EVENS. Yeah, I know.

Listen. Liverpool have done their job. The champagne's been popped, the hangovers nursed, and now they're facing a Chelsea side that's taken 17 points from their last eight matches. The value's staring us in the face.

Diaz: The Colombian Danger Man

James has spotted something interesting – Luis Diaz to score or assist at 2/1. The Colombian has been directly involved in goals in six of his last seven Premier League appearances. That's ridiculous consistency.

Back in January, I put £50 on Diaz to hit double figures in both goals and assists this season. I'm still sweating on that one...

Brighton vs Newcastle: The Seagulls' Happy Hunting Ground

Newcastle are winless in ALL SEVEN of their Premier League visits to Brighton. Seven! I had to double-check that stat because it seemed too perfect.

Kweku's backing Brighton at 8/5, and history's on his side. The Seagulls have already beaten Newcastle twice this season – 1-0 in the league and 2-1 in teh FA Cup.

Me? I'm going for goals again. Over 4.5 at 3/1.

Brighton's last 11 matches have seen 45 goals – that's 4.1 per game on average. My editor bet me $20 I couldn't find a more goal-heavy run in the league this season. He was right, I couldn't.

Isak Can't Stop Scoring (And I Can't Stop Backing Him)

James is all over Alexander Isak to score anytime at 11/10. "When you're getting odds against on a prime striker like Isak, you HAVE to look at it," he insists.

Only Salah has more league goals than Isak in 2025. The Swedish striker has made me a small fortune this season – I'm talking enough for a weekend in Barcelona with the missus next month. Cheers, Alex!

Fancy a Flutter at Newmarket?

Saturday's 3:35pm at Newmarket is where the real racing fans will be focusing.

James is backing Field of Gold at 7/4. "He's a really likeable bay and was a smart horse last year as a two-year-old," he explains, while running through the other contenders – Ruling Court (4/1), Expanded (9/2), Scorthy Champ (13/2), and Shadow of Light (7/1).

I lost £120 on horses last weekend. Poor form from me.

Cricket? In MY Football Column?

We're finishing with a quick look at the IPL clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings.

James is eyeing up Virat Kohli as top RCB run scorer at 17/10. The Indian superstar has been in ridiculous form, scoring 51, 70, and 73 in his last three games.

I've never understood cricket. Spent three hours at Lord's in 2018 and still couldn't tell you what was happening. But I trust James with my betting life... adn my mortgage depends on it.
